Critics, filmmakers, and programmers look at the year in art
At the end of the year, we are flooded with "Top-X" lists published by countless institutions that invite their writers to enumerate the year’s best. These lists are well-ordered; readers can classify and codify them to reach a consensus on the 'good work'. But after all that, is there any room for something more spontaneous, unburdened, even kind of hazy—a year-end review that feels like a party rather than a "report"?
Risking blurred boundaries and losing our way, HIGHLIGHT invites friends across different fields, nationalities, and roles to join the party where we cross paths—with each other and with various works (of art). No dress code, no standing in line; just share a list of five works every participant encountered this year that truly moved them.
As we often meet new friends at a party—whether through the introductions of old ones or by pure serendipity—this 'list' is an open invitation to others. Although the format may appear formal, it will not, and has no intention to become a buying guide or a checklist of "must-sees." Instead, we believe it allows us all, one last time before the year ends, to engage in an unknown, stimulating, and impromptu jam with these works and with one another.

年末總會出現各種以媒介劃界的X大名單,許多媒體亦邀請自家作者分享年度最佳。這些名單充滿秩序,讀者能夠明確地根據媒介分類、收藏名單,從中梳理出某種關於最佳作品的「共識」。然而,除此之外,有沒有一種更隨機、更輕鬆,或甚至像是一場「派對」,而非「提報」的年度回顧可能?
冒著混淆不清、喪失座標的風險,「HIGHLIGHT」邀請了領域、國籍、職位殊異的藝文工作者們,共享一場與他者,以及各種作品相遇的派對。沒有 dress code、無須排隊,入場僅需遞交一份名單,記載今年與你相遇,為其動容的五件作品。以下呈現由台灣、香港等地影評、導演、策展人、評審、研究者、媒體編輯所組成的派對現場。請注意,即便報導以清單形式呈現,但它並不會,亦無意成為某種選片指南或必看清單。比起如此,其更趨近於一次重返派對現場的嘗試,從中瞥見事物與個體之間的律動共振。
如同吾等總因聚會中的人際紐帶或機緣巧合結識新朋友,這份「名單」更是對他人敞開的邀請,使我們都能在年末再一次地,與作品和他者展開一場未知且刺激的即興共演。
